15.30 USING FOLKTALES AS A SOURCE FOR LANGUAGE RESEARCH  Almost all cultures have a storytelling tradition. These traditional folktales are not just intangible cultural heritage, they can also reveal a lot about the grammar of a language. Folktales can contain certain words or grammatical constructions that are not found in everyday conversations. Izabela Jordanoska (Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics) went to Macedonia to record spoken folktales – what did she learn? And how did she go about this?

15.55 THE BENEFITS OF READING TO YOUR CHILD
Reading a bedtime story to your children does not only make for warm memories, but it is also beneficial for their language development. Yayun Zhang (Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics) researches the benefits of reading to your children. How does this affect their language skills? And why?

16.20 FILMS ABOUT SCIENCE
Enny Das and Irem Couchouron of the InScience International Grand Jury will be interviewed about the value of films about science, and their experience of the 2024 edition of InScience film festival.

16.40 POETRY OF A BUTCH LESBIAN
‘My whole fucking life is a protest’, states Joelle Taylor in a compelling spoken word piece on the beauty and dangers of living as a butch lesbian. The week after InScience Festival, she’ll be coming to Nijmegen. Ruud van den Beuken (Radboud University) prepares us with an analysis of her work. How does Taylor use poetry to explore and question gender and sexuality?

17.05 TRANS LANGUAGE AS DESIRE PATHS
Non-binary and trans people are masters at creating their own language. Charlie Loopuijt (Radboud University) points out that this is a sign that mainstream language is lacking to describe their lived reality. He approaches trans language as desire paths (olifantenpaadjes in Dutch). Charlie will present their ideas and perform some of their own poetry about queerness.
