Richland

De stad Richland werd gebouwd door de Amerikaanse overheid om werknemers te huisvesten die plutonium produceerden voor het Manhattan project, resulterend in de atoombommen waarmee in 1945 Hiroshima en Nagasaki werden gebombardeerd.  

Richland vertelt het verhaal achter deze stad, in archiefbeelden, hedendaagse observaties en gesprekken met nucleaire arbeiders, bewoners, archeologen, lokale stammen en een kleindochter van Japanners die de bombardementen overleefden. Daarmee is de documentaire een lyrische meditatie over een gevoel van thuis, veiligheid, witheid en geologische tijd. 

TALK Richland is a city created in a couple of months for aggressive purposes. Some of the citizens criticise the nuclear bomb heritage. Others say: ‘proud of the cloud’. Either way, the residents have made ‘the bomb’ into their identity. With Dario Fazzi (Roosevelt Institute for American Studies) we discuss both the environmental impact of US nuclear power and the manifestation of nationalism in Richland.
