Protest Lab #4: Film & Gesprek – The Encampments
This screening of The Encampments is part of Protest Lab and is organized in collaboration with InScience Film Festival. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion between Fréderike Geerdink (journalist and author of Alle journalistiek is activisme, on the relationship between journalism and activism), Ties van den Bogaard (media spokesperson of the Palestine Encampment in Nijmegen in 2024) and Joris Gerritsen (editor in chief of De Gelderlander).
In recent years, following nationwide uprisings in the United States, student encampments have emerged on many Dutch university campuses. Students protested the genocide in Gaza and demanded action from their universities. These encampments also helped raise awareness of the genocide in Gaza among the Dutch public. How did these student movements achieve this, and what role did the encampments play?
It is not always easy for journalists to report on the events that unfold during student protests. While covering these encampments and their impact, many journalists strive for neutrality and objectivity. But is this desirable—or even possible? And if not, how do journalists deal with the fact that they speak from a certain political position? Together with Fréderike, Ties and Joris, we will discuss how journalism and activism relate to each other, and why this relationship is sometimes complicated.
The talk will be held in English, but questions may also be asked in Dutch.
