Wider Than the Sky
Film
Wider Than the Sky is a soul-searching journey in which dancing bodies and machine voices probe whether human imagination and emotion extend beyond what ‘intelligent’ robots might ever truly learn to feel.
‘What makes a human being unique?’ asks Emeca, a humanoid AI-powered robot whose sense of wonder narrates the film. Through a poetic and intricately crafted weave of interviews, performances and computer-generated imagery, the film moves between laboratories and cultural spaces. Scientists, engineers, artists and choreographers test how far machines can go in mimicking perception, expression, emotion, imagination and empathy. Resisting doomsday fantasies, Wider Than the Sky instead explores how we shape AI, the values and ethics we encode within it, and how this strange new technological mirror reflects our own nature back at us.
