TALK

As part of the InScience International Science Film Festival 2026, the Serendipity Session invites audiences to explore urgent scientific and societal matters through film, conversation, and interdisciplinary exchange. By discussing one theme from four different perspectives.

This year’s session is inspired by the short film Stars by Mojisola Abebayo, which highlights the ancestral astronomical knowledge of the Dogon people. The discussion will focus on the following theme:

“The disappearance of Indigenous knowledge systems – How important are Indigenous Science practices for the future of our planet?”

The session brings together perspectives from astrophysics, environmental science, biology, medicine and linguistics research to show how Indigenous knowledge has shaped scientific understanding of the natural world. From observing the stars and protecting ecosystems to sustainable land management and traditional healing methods, Indigenous knowledge is highlighted as a rigorous and valuable form of scientific practice.

The speakers include Diane Vlet, who will discuss her work on Indigenous history, intergenerational memory, and integrating these histories into Dutch education. Luis Miguel Rojas Berscia will share his expertise in linguistics, highlighting Indigenous languages and their role in preserving knowledge and culture. Jessica Dempsey will draw on her experience as director of ASTRON and her astronomy projects in Hawaii and New Zealand. Sebastian Perez Marquez will explore his collaborations with Mapuche, Lickan Antay, and Rapa Nui communities in Chile through the Astrodiálogos project.
