Publieksopening: Spaceship Earth
- Language talk: Dutch
In 1991, a collaboration between a group of hippies, performance artists, and scientists resulted in Biosphere 2: a futuristic structure designed to house a perfect replica of Earth’s ecosystem. This documentary follows the development of this bizarre project that was met with controversy yet can also be seen as progressive in light of the climate ideas thirty years later. However, it begs the question: is this ecological activism at work or just plain entertainment?
Talk
Dutch scientist Joost van Haren (The University of Arizona) was already involved in the research in the BioSphere 2 fifteen years ago. He still uses the biodome today. The ecosystems created offer an excellent laboratory to test the impact climate change has on the rainforest. Science journalist Anne van Kessel talks to him: What knowledge did the Biosphere 2 yield at the time? What is he now learning about climate change? And how can we use this knowledge to save the earth?
