NTR De Kennis van Nu: Diepvriesdierentuin

A special freezer at the Frozen Zoo in San Diego stores 10,000 genetic samples from a thousand different animal species. It is a modern Noah’s Ark where cells of near-extinct and already-extinct animals are kept to breed them back. The biggest challenge is to save the northern white rhino from extinction. There are currently only two individuals of this species, both females. So they cannot reproduce without the help of science. The researchers at the Frozen Zoo are doing everything they can to make rhino embryos from skin cells in the lab and then place them in a surrogate mother of a different species.

TALK Na het vertonen van de film gaan we in gesprek met regisseur Susanne Linssen. En ze neemt bijzondere gasten mee: Philippe Helsen en Zjef Pereboom van het Antwerp Centre for Research and Conservation van ZOO Antwerpen en ZOO Planckendael. Zij vertellen hoe Europese dierentuinen en wetenschappers samenwerken om diersoorten die in het wild vrijwel of geheel uitgestorven zijn, veilig te stellen. Dat gebeurt door genetisch materiaal in te vriezen maar ook door speciale fokprogramma’s op te zetten.
