With NetherLENS, InScience presents no fewer than seven home-grown short films about science. From documentary to dance film and from animation to evolutionary biology: this is a program with many flavors.

We learn more about the mysterious mycorrhiza, underground fungi that are essential for the root system of plants, in The Underground Astronaut. The moving documentary New Eye shows the craft behind making eye prostheses. In Moving Mountains we climb the Himalayan mountains, together with scientists who have to check the measuring equipment with which they monitor climate change at a height of thousands of meters.

MICRO|MACRO

MICRO|MACRO

In video artwork MICRO|MACRO, Studio Beerdier gives an impression of a child’s cancer treatment. The starting point for this animated film is the resilience of  children: in general, children can undergo more intensive treatments than adults, because their bodies have a better ability to recover. This “superpower” is often underexposed in childhood cancer coverage.

The Underground Astronaut

The Underground Astronaut

Beneath our feet lies a mystery. A complex underground network of fungi keeps our ecosystem alive by exchanging nutrients and carbon with plants and trees. Remarkably, no one quite knows how these advanced and age-old systems operate, and how they are affected by climate change.

Moving Mountains

Moving Mountains

On his quest to map the consequences of climate change, mountain hydrologist Walter Immerzeel and his team venture to heights where other scientists do not go. From his tent base in the Himalayas, he monitors over 200 instruments measuring variables like snowfall, temperature, air pressure, solar irradiance, windspeed and more. These data must be extremely accurate in order to reliably predict changes in the region’s water cycle – which is of crucial importance for the millions of people who live in the climate-sensitive areas downstream. In Moving Mountains, filmmaker and mountaineer Renko Douze follows Immerzeel on one of his mountain expeditions.
