Just Our Heart

“Grief is love that has nowhere to go.” Renowned director Maartje Nevejan (Descending the Mountain) returns to InScience with an intimate and poignant exploration of mourning rituals and the search for healing.
At its heart are individuals grappling with loss, ranging from the death of a parent to ecological grief: two Belgian siblings, participants in experimental ayahuasca research, an ex-biologist, a Bolivian-born woman of Indigenous ancestry, and Nevejan herself. As collective rites of passage rapidly disappear in contemporary society, the film reflects on how to navigate despair in uncertain times. Intercut with metaphoric images of a float with no clear destination and accompanied by ethereal music, Just Our Heart bravely tackles a taboo subject by creating space for perspectives from the periphery of science.
