InVision – Exploration: taking your research to the next level (Sub-session C)

In the workshop Exploration: Taking your research to the next level, filmmakers, artists and scientists will explore how working across disciplines can improve and diversify an audiovisual or researchproject. How do you reach a large public for your research? How do you make your research project understandable for outsiders? And how can you create a visually appealing film about an abstract subject? (Film)makers and scientists explore shared methods, questions and strategies and use each others perspectives to take their project to the next level. 

Because of the small capacity of the workshop there will be opportunities to discuss specific cases, or to discuss larger abstract questions. How do you visualize science? How do you make theoretical questions, which are often presented in texts or graphs, cinematic and visually appealing? In what way do you form a narrative, and from what perspective do you tell the story? And when is your research or film really finished? This workshop stimulates an open discussion between scientists and artists, with the key question; how can research and audiovisual projects substantiate each other? The aim of this workshop is to stimulate the interaction between scientists and art professionals by discussing shared questions, obstacles and opportunities. 

This workshop is moderated by former artistic director of IDFA (International Documentary Filmfestival Amsterdam) and former chairman of the KNAW (Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences) Barbara Visser. Barbara is a visual artist and filmmaker herself and is developing a master’s degree in the 
visualization of science.
