A biting political satire that exposes the hidden filth inside our hamburgers, both literal and systemic. The contamination goes beyond unsanitary meat; it extends to a broken immigration system and inhumane working conditions.
Director Richard Linklater (Before Sunrise, Boyhood) often weaves political themes into his films, but never as boldly as in this almost-forgotten 2006 gem. With his signature focus on human stories and deeply relatable characters, he takes us into the darkest corners of our food production machine: the slaughterhouses. The film doesn’t just point a finger towards the indifference that surrounds cruelties inflicted upon animals – it also condemns a corrupt political system that preys on the desperation of the lower classes, forcing them into the brutal, unseen labour that fuels our fast-food cravings.
