Een mooi gebaar

Two short films by Anja Hiddinga, who mainly focuses on deaf people and sign language in her work as an anthropologist (UvA) and filmmaker.

Luister nou… Nee, kijk! shows the long struggle it took to have Dutch Sign Language (NGT) recognized as an official language. The film shows unique interview material from two men who played a major role in the position of NGT in the Netherlands – one in a positive and one in a negative sense. We gain insight into the harsh policy of Antoine van Uden at the Institute for the Deaf in Sint Michielsgestel. And how Ben Tervoort, pioneer and the first sign linguist in the Netherlands, countered this with the help of science. The film is shown on the big screen for the first time.

Imaginings is a series of poetic self-portraits in Dutch Sign Language. Young Deaf people talk about their dreams for themselves and the world.

TALK Nederlandse gebarentaal (NGT) wordt pas sinds 2021 als officiële taal erkend in Nederland. Gebarentaaldeskundige Richard Cokart (Nederlands Gebarencentrum) gaat in op de vraag wat taalwetenschappelijk onderzoek heeft betekend heeft voor de erkenning van gebarentaal. En we kijken naar de rol die NGT speelt in de Dovencultuur in Nederland. Filmmaker Anja Hiddinga is aanwezig en licht haar werk toe. Met live performance van dichterscollectief Kitchen’s Light. 

Dit programma is volledig in Nederlandse gebarentaal. Voor mensen die dat niet begrijpen, is er een tolk naar gesproken Nederlands.
