In the Canadian documentary Coextinction, two passionate filmmakers investigate the fate of the endangered killer whale. This brings them into contact with activists, Indigenous leaders and renowned scientists on a journey of discovery that soon reveals many other dangers in the local ecosystem.

Before this film, the short film ‘Listen to the Beat of Our Images’ will be screened: a unique essay film about the dark colonial sides of space travel.

TALK ‘Not one orca was lost when we stewarded the land.’ In Coextinction, Indigenous communities in the United States and Canada show how a disturbed ecosystem affects them, and how they always fought against these damaging changes. This is true for many Indigenous activists all over the world. Chautuileo Tranamil, Mapuche-Pewenche herself, shares the meaning of orcas in Mapuche culture and draws comparisons between the struggles in the documentary and those of her own community in Chili.

This program is a collaboration with art & climate festival ‘Nimma aan zee’, that takes place on 9, 10 and 11 June 2023 in LUX.
