El Equipo (2023)

This stunning documentary shows how science became a pillar of a universal fight for human rights. The story starts in the 1980s, when a group of Argentine students decide to help legendary forensic scientist Clyde Snow with his investigation into the desaparacidos – the thousands of people who ‘disappeared’ during the Argentine dictatorship in the years before.

With great success, because in the decades that followed this team was called upon all over the world to dig for the truth behind massacres and mass graves, from Kurdistan to Ethiopia to the horrific El Mozoto massacre in El Salvador. The scientists manage to uncover the truth every where they go, but that is not without danger.

A Year in a Field (2022)

It has been standing guard for millennia, a meters-high monolith in an English field. Award-winning documentary filmmaker Christopher Morris kept this rock company for a year and made a contemplative and poetic documentary about time and geological patience.

The film is also a silent cry about the climate crisis and a penetrating meditation on what life is. A film full of ideas that resonate deeply, told as a penetrating dream that shakes you awake.

Saturday 5 october in GIGANT Apeldoorn – tickets

Neutrino - the poet among the elementary particles (2023)

The Super-Kamiokande Neutrino Detector is located at a depth of more than a thousand meters in the Japanese mountain Ikeno-yama. This detector is designed for the physical study of the neutrino – an elementary particle that may explain the origin of the universe. International scientists live and work in the mountain village together with the local population and their spiritual leaders.

In this poetic-philosophical documentary, the invisible quantum world and tangible reality come together in encounters with colorful scientists and villagers. A film that starts as a personal journey of discovery into physical knowledge and grows into a universal existential quest.

Wednesday 2 oktober in Forum Groningen – tickets
Friday 4 oktober in GIGANT Apeldoorn – tickets
Sunday 6 oktober in Filmhuis de Spiegel Heerlen – tickets

Eternal You (2024)

If you had the opportunity to talk to a deceased loved one, would you take it? Eternal You delves into the world of start-ups that try to bring the dead back to ‘life’ by creating avatars of the deceased with AI. The film explores the age-old human desire for immortality and poses penetrating questions about the commercial realization of this dream. An urgent, commandingly told and extremely topical film.

Screenings:
Monday 30 september in Forum Groningen – tickets
Wednesday 2 october in Focus Filmtheater Arnhem – tickets
Sunday 6 october in Filmhuis de Spiegel Heerlen – tickets

In Wolf Country (2023)

Few people will have missed it: after a long absence, the wolf is back in Western Europe. This documentary shows how the return of the wolf in Germany was made possible by democratically made decisions, which are carefully managed within a bureaucratic framework

We follow scientists, conservationists and sheep herders, who keep a close eye on the wolf for various reasons. We see them at work in the field and laboratories, and experience how they get involved in the public debate about the wolf – which is unfortunately devoid of factual and testable knowledge.

Screenings:
Monday 30 september in Focus Filmtheater Arnhem – tickets
Wednesday 2 october in Filmtheater Kriterion – tickets
Friday 4 october in GIGANT Apeldoorn – tickets
Sunday 6 october in Heerenstraat Theater Wageningen – tickets

The Arc of Oblivion (2023)

In a universe made up of forces that want to tear everything to pieces, why are people so determined to leave a mark on Earth? For his new documentary, filmmaker Ian Cheney delves into the attic of his own memory in search of the driving forces behind our human urge to collect.

His quest begins with building an ark on a field in Maine, aiming to preserve the archive of his own life from the relentless ticking of time. He invites a number of guests here to talk about their memories, including Werner Herzog. The lively documentary then travels all over the world: to salt mines in the Alps, fjords in the Arctic and ancient libraries in the Sahara.

Sunday 6 october in Heerenstraat Theater Wageningen – tickets

InScience on Tour 2023

From March 16 to 19, 2023, the InScience film festival in Nijmegen showed 55 of the most impressive science films available at that time. The eighth edition of the festival was all about experiment. Thirteen films were shown for the first time in the Netherlands, including the latest film by Werner Herzog.

In the InScience festival program, current challenges are highlighted in a larger scale, from climate crisis to virus pandemic and from trauma to transphobia. These are films that also explore solutions, such as rewilding, neurotechnology, mass vaccines and ground-breaking medical science. Films that ask questions. Films that celebrate wonder.

InScience toured the Netherlands again in 2023. Experience the best of the fest throughout the country!
