New edition Science Film Club with theme: scientific breakthroughs
InScience and NEMO Kennislink have launched the online Science Film Club: every first Wednesday of the month we meet online at 19:30 to watch a science film together and discuss it with researchers and each other. During InScience 2021 we will make an exception. On Friday 12 November at 19:30 we will discuss the theme ‘scientific breakthroughs’.
Friday 12 November - Scientific Breakthroughs
That one hunch, that sudden discovery, that successful experiment. Once in a while, the academic world is shaken by a ‘scientific breakthrough’. What is it like to be involved in such a breakthrough? How exciting is it when your field is brought forward so suddenly?
Inspired by the documentary Secrets of the Surface: The Mathematical Vision of Maryam Mirzakhani – about the life’s work of mathematician Maryam Mirzakhani – we are organizing a special online edition of the Science Film Club. We will discuss scientific breakthroughs and the effect they have – on researchers, science, and the rest of the world. Laura van Niftrik (Radboud University) is researching the recently discovered anammox bacterium – which she is now using to generate energy from wastewater. Raymond Staals (Wageningen University) has been researching and using CRISPR-Cas for years – with which we can tinker with the DNA of cells. Mathematician Carla Stegehuis (University of Twente) tells more about the work of Maryam Mirzakhani and how she helped mathematics advance.
Join the online conversation on Friday 12 November at 19:30. Before or after the conversation, watch the film Secrets of the Surface: The Mathematical Vision of Maryam Mirzakhani independently via InScience’s online platform. The registration link will follow soon.
