Joyeeta Gupta wins Spinozaprijs
Joyeeta Gupta, Professor of Environment and Development of the Global South at the UvA, has been awarded the Spinozaprijs. During InScience 2020 she was one of the Big Idea speakers. In her lecture, she discussed the relationship between sustainability and inequality in our current economic system, and how we can make the future better for everyone. Watch her lecture below.
Gupta will receive an amount of 1.5 million euros for her research into distribution issues as a result of the climate crisis. With her research, she draws attention to global justice: developing countries are hit hardest by climate change, even though they are not the main culprits.
In addition, Gupta is a prominent member of the global community concerned with environmental issues. For example, she was lead author of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) of the United Nations, which won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.
