InScience 2025: Food for thought

InScience Film Festival is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year with a special anniversary edition from 11 to 16 March 2025 in and around LUX Nijmegen. This year’s theme, ‘Food for Thought’, shows how InScience has been inspiring and stimulating for a decade. InScience celebrates wonder and stimulates dialogue through film and science, always with an eye to the future. ‘Food for Thought’ is not just about the way in which films, science and art nourish us with new perspectives. This anniversary edition will also specifically focus on our food, from origin to destination.

InScience offers in-depth talks, discussions, experiments and art installations. Special attention is paid to immersive, expanded and event cinema in the brand new section ‘Beyond’: films that go beyond the boundaries of the silver screen. As in previous years, the festival also offers a number of film classics, a programme for professionals and an extensive junior programme with workshops and interactive activities.

A programme that leaves you wanting more
The festival offers a wide range of films and activities around the theme of food and science. For example, the festival shows the latest film by documentary pioneer Frederick Wiseman, Menus-Plaisirs — Les Troisgros. In this four-hour look behind the scenes of a renowned Michelin restaurant, Wiseman takes the viewer to the core of haute cuisine. Chef Emile van der Staak of De Nieuwe Winkel, known for his focus on sustainable gastronomy, will also be joining us. The Keuringsdienst van Waarde will be visiting to give the public a more critical look at our food chain.

Visitors can enjoy film classics such as Fast Food Nation and Babette’s Feast. The Beyond programme offers a collective VR experience with, among others, the impressive VR 360 films Evolver and Texada. The festival has also matured in terms of accessibility and offers low-stimulus programmes for those looking for a quieter festival experience.

Junior programme: a party for the youngest researchers
InScience has put together a tasty junior programme for the youngest visitors. On Saturday, they will enjoy the original version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory from 1971. On Sunday, they will meet the nominees for the Klokhuis Wetenschapsprijs during ‘Ontmoet de onderzoeker’ in the Bibliotheek Mariënburg and the award will be presented again.Around this, children can participate in all kinds of workshops and interactive activities that stimulate their curiosity and creativity.

A decade of growth
What started as a modest festival with a few thousand visitors has grown into a versatile event with programmes all year round. Think of the extensive educational projects and on-tour screenings throughout the Netherlands that appeal to all kinds of different audiences. InScience connects and paves the way for new talent. During the festival, InScience brings scientists and filmmakers together during the professionals program InVision. Throughout the year, InScience is involved in various productions by young talent – for example TOEKOMSTBELDEN, where three filmmakers discussed the opportunities and dangers of technological developments in healthcare. More news for the professionals: new competitions will be added in the upcoming edition. Namely: InLab, InSights, InDutch and InShort!
