Film & Talk: Ich bin dein Mensch
On Wednesday 29 June, InScience organizes a film screening with discussion in LUX. We are showing the charming comedy Ich bin dein Mensch, which also screened at our festival last year. After the film, a moderator from InScience will have a conversation with philosopher Anco Peeters and dating coach Patricia Huijbers, in which they will elaborate on the role of technology in modern love.
Free will, love, existential headwinds, loneliness, artificial intelligence and synthetic sex: Ich bin dein Mensch is a fresh cocktail of many themes. We see how Alma, archaeologist and bachelor, takes in the love robot Tom for three weeks as an experiment. Tom’s algorithm is programmed in such a way that he learns more and more how he makes you happy. In short, he is the highway to perfect happiness, as a life partner who fulfills all your wishes. Because who wouldn’t want that? Right?
The film seems written with a smile and always manages to surprise, among other things by playing a clever game with the well-known romcom conventions and by flirting elegantly with science fiction, subtle comedy and genuine drama. It is also a film that sincerely muses on what it means to be a human being, a human being with the full range of experiences. Big questions are asked, but thanks to the light-hearted tone and the pleasant pace, the film manages to remain human itself.
Talk
The film is followed by a conversation with Anco Peeters, philosopher and researcher in artificial intelligence, and Patricia Huijbers Koenders, owner of relationship agency Date & Match who has been active as a matchmaker and dating coach for more than ten years. They will discuss the role of technology in love, led by a moderator from InScience. Endless dating sites, sex robots, algorithms that filter matches for you and virtual reality dates… will love become an on-demand product? And do we really want that?
