Dutch Light

Dutch Light

17th century paintings from Holland have long been renowned for their extraordinary lighting. This created the myth that Dutch light is something different from light in other countries, something special. Now the German painter Joseph Beuys has stated that the special Dutch light has gone. The reason is that the light came mirrored from the Zuyder Zee, but the Zuyder Zee has been drained to create polders. This beautifully shot documentary tries to find out if there is such a thing as Dutch light and whether Beuys was right. Meanwhile it also tries to show the viewer how to look at and appreciate light.
